Has anyone out there planted and hunted over a winter pea or lablab plot? If so, how was the forage approached by game? I am establishing a late season plot that will be a shooter plot for my eight year old and was wondering if anyone has any success stories to share.

never hunted over winter peas but I have a few clover fields that have been good producers over the years. Chippy has killed his two biggest bucks over them. Honeyhole for sheds in the spring also. Just getting ready to plant mine turnips rape barassica and clover mix I made up and maybe a little chickory that way it will still be good in the spring when they need to put body mass back on.

I have two really good clover plots to hunt over but, I have a nice piece of land right smack between them that I want to try something a little bit different. We have the old logging roads that lead to our one plot planted and left the about thirty yards out in to the food plot brush up a bit for staging. We have a ton of autumn olive planted around the plot that brings game in - Big Time. We also have a feeding area that is strictly a no kill area that we plant in turnips and leave them winter in. Its a nice high loam soil that lets the turnips get as big as softballs. No kidding. I've tried everything from premium perrenial to bio-maxx. Just wanting to be a little more diversified and give junior a good chance at his first buck. If he does as good with the whitetails as he does with turkey, he's going to give the old man a run for his money!! Speaking of old Chippy, has anyone seen him lately? I think the boy's ruttin'. Last time I saw him he was starting to swell up!!

yep he is getting ready to take the big leap and tie the not! he has been rutting for about 2 yrs straight now. Do you plant any corn and leave a few rows stand cause that is a killer in the winter months.

That bio-maxx is a corn and soybean mix. It has a couple different types of corn and three different types of beans in it. The hard part is keeping the deer out of the beans until they get established. I started planting the edges in green patch plus to keep their minds off of the beans but it's hard to do. I leave everything stand until spring so they can get the most out of the plot. Seems to keep animals in the area. Last year we even had a rogue billy goat visiting the plot. Don't know where he came from but the idea of an "exotic hunt" did come to mind.

It was tough. If we hadn't been seeing a few decent bucks it would have been billy on a stick for sure.

I am hearing ya on that one but surely he was not helping the situation of keeping the bucks there. Would have made great video.

I hope we make some video magic happen this year with our set up. That's always the rough part - getting everything to come together on film. We got some kickin' video this spring whacking some birds. Gotta see it!!
